Cupping Therapy

Different types of cupping we use at Custom Chiropractor:

  • Dry cupping: the cups are applied statically and stay fixed for a certain amount of time
  • Massage cupping: the cups glide over the affected area to combine massage and cupping effects for myofascial release

What is cupping?

Cupping therapy creates a mechanical decompression of 7-10 mm to increase movement and glide between fascia and skin. This helps to enhance mobility of the tissues as well as improves on how we perceive the affected area. The sensory representation is disrupted with the application of the cups. When movement is incorporated while the cups are applied, the benefits are longer lasting. The cup is applied to a specific area of the body. A suction device creates a vacuum which helps to increase blood flow to the area. The vacuum that is created depends on the comfort level of the patient. Cupping can be applied for postural cueing, performance, rehabilitation and pain modulation.

History of cupping:

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine that has been used since the 17th century in Egypt and China. The true origin is a controversy. Cupping was used to treat diseases as well as menstrual irregularities, weakened appetite, vertigo and pain. Even in Greece, cupping made its appearance and was used by Hippocrates. He used the cups for treating ailments such as angina. The cups were first made out of animal horns then changed to bamboo cups and now they can be glass, plastic or silicon.
