What is preventative care?
Preventative care, also known as maintenance care, is the final stage of chiropractic care. Maintenance care is what phase of treatment our patients transition into when their condition has resolved and they are able to partake in their normal activities without pain. Preventative care is usually scheduled for regular intervals in larger gaps in between appointments, for example 4 to 8 weeks or even longer. Whereas someone with acute pain or that is actively in pain will be scheduled much more often.
Why is preventative care important?
Just like going to the dentist or general physician, it is important to see a chiropractor to prevent future injuries or pain. Preventative care is important for long-lasting benefits, overall health, and well-being. Preventative care is performed at regular intervals to prevent pain from returning or those without pain to prevent future injuries and to promote health. Preventative care can also lead to improved posture, better function, flexibility, and fewer injuries.
According to research, maintenance care patients with regularly scheduled intervals of treatment experienced less low back pain than patients who only saw their chiropractor “as needed” and “maintenance care can be considered an evidence-based method to perform secondary or tertiary prevention in patients with previous episodes of low back pain, who report a good outcome from the initial treatments.”
