Kinesiology Taping : RockTape
WHAT IS KINESIOLOGY TAPE?
Let’s talk about pain first! When we touch a hot stove, a pain message is sent from the skin to the brain. The message is transmitted by pain receptors, nociceptors, with the help of neurotransmitters. Once the message is received and interpreted by the brain, a response is sent to the spinal cord and nerves to send signals to decrease the pain.
Kinesiology tape is applied directly to the skin of a problem area and the same thing happens; a signal is sent to the brain to mitigate the pain felt. When tape is applied to the skin it has a relieving, decompressive effect on the skin and fascia/ muscle which helps to reduce pain and edema. Based on the positioning of the tape, it will promote pain relieving postures that place less pressure on the affected area. This decompression also helps with fluid dynamics to enhance recovery and lymphatic drainage. Lastly, due to the tape application on the skin, neurosensory input counters the constant output of pain from the brain.
Kinesiology tape is made out of a stretchable latex-free material that does not limit movement but instead provides motor control to all full range of motion of the joint.
In short, k-tape helps with
- Pain mitigation
- Tissue decompression
- Neurosensory input
HOW DO THE CHIROPRACTORS AT CUSTOM CHIROPRACTOR USE K-TAPE?
At Custom Chiropractor, we apply rocktape to acute and chronic pain after working on the area of concern with either ART, IASTM or cupping. Once the tape is on, we prescribe specific exercises to practice good patterns. At Functional Movement Training (FMT) they say “touch it, tape it, move it.”
HOW LONG WILL THE TAPE STAY ON?
RockTape is designed to stay on the skin for 3-5 days. Tape can be applied to practice good posture, to help support a strain muscle, to help with chronic ankle proprioception or to help with nerve impingements and so much more.
